Synonymous with French-South African heritage, the town of Franschhoek hosts a Bastille Festival in mid-July every year. Here, every year, Huguenot Street is gaily decorated in the colours of the French flag. Local vendors fill the pavements with stalls offering tempting items for sale and French-inspired cuisine. There is always live music throughout the weekend and a dress up hire shop in the Town Hall allows visitors to get into the spirit of things. The pierce-de-resistance of the festival are the well-priced wine tasting coupons though, allowing festival participants to warm-up while they sample Franschhoek’s finest wines. This year’s festival is scheduled to take place on 15 and 16 July.
The Bastille Day Trail Run also takes place in Franschhoek over this weekend and is scheduled for 16 July 2022 this year. Here runners follow winding rivers and run up into the picturesque mountains surrounding Franschhoek.
